With us here at RFH Classics we have this 1969 (G) Riley 4/72 4 Dr finished in Almond Green with contrasting Green Leather trim. What a lovely looking car this, these are quite a rare sight to see nowadays and although the body is similar to the to the Morris Oxford or Austin Cambridge the Riley when it was originally sold was built in smaller numbers and was priced at a fair amount more than its counterparts. The styling on the Riley model certainly sets it apart, the car is well adorned with lovely chrome accents which are in very good condition.
The car was first registered in July 1969 through Morris Garages of London Road, Newbury to a local chap from Thatcham who went on to own the car for some 28 years. The second keeper was also from Thatcham went on to own the car fro the next five years before the car headed off to the third owner in Tadley for 3 years. Owner number four was also from Tadley which indicates the car was probably well known locally, he only had the car for 4 years before it travelled all the way up to Carlisle where it lived for 7 years before heading back down the country to the last owner who has owned the car fro the past seven years. It is clear from the condition of the car that is has been very well cared for by all the previous owners as the car is in lovely order both inside and out.
The interior of the Riley features Leather trim to the front and rear seats, this leather has a lovely age related patina to it and the seats are very comfortable, seats belts are fitted to the two front seats and there is a belt fitted in the rear behind the driver. The wood dash is very period and in excellent order, there are wooden door capping to match the dash that again are in good order. In front of the driver there a stylish cowling containing is an array of dials for the speedo, rev counter, oil pressure, fuel gauge and amps charge rate. Additionally there are the switches for the lights and the manual choke pull. One of the lovely features the driver gets to enjoy is the lovely original black steering wheel with a charming Chrome horn push and Riley badge. In the centre of the dash there are the rotary heater and ventilation controls, the optional Crusader Radio and the very nice Quarts clock with Chrome bezel. The carpets are in matching Green and are in excellent condition both in the front and rear.
Under the bonnet the 1622cc petrol 4 cylinder engine was fitted with Twin Carburettors on the Riley and had a claimed 68hp when new which was at the time a not inconsiderable power unit. The engine is a 3 bearing with chain driven camshaft that is paired to 4 speed manual gearbox that featured syncromesh on 2nd, 3rd and forth gears and after now giving it a run we can confirm the car does drive very well. Under the bonnet the finish is equally as good as the exterior bodywork of the whole car and the exceptionally large 19 cubic feet boot gives you a generous luggage area. In the office we have a very good history file for the Riley that contains a original sales brochure and a considerable amount of old MOT tests and receipts for work undertaken.
