With us now at RFH Classics we have this fabulous 1937 Morris 8 Series 1 Four Seat Tourer finished in two tone Red & Black with matching Red Leather interior trim. This wonderful looking Morris has just arrived with us in part exchange and is a real head turner. The car has had very low ownership for its age, having only had 5 former owners in 87 years. First registered in London in March 1937, this Morris Eight Tourer sadly comes with no early history however the green VE60 logbook shows that by 1971 it was resident in Surrey and that by the early 2000’s it had moved to Norfolk where a previous owner treated it to a full body-off restoration between 2006 and 2011. It was during this restoration program, which was a very comprehensive job that included rebuilding the engine, installing a new wiring loom along with a full interior retrim including carpets, all of which were done to a very high standard. Judging from what we have seen online it indicates that the miles were set to zero during the rebuild as the car is now only showing 769 miles. We have a file with a number of invoices and receipts showing the work done but just looking at the car shows the standard of the work.
When it was new the Morris 8 was available as a two or four-seat tourer and a two or four-door saloon, the Eight was capable of 60mph and 40mpg from its 23.5bhp 948cc side-valve engine, driving through a three-speed box with synchromesh on the top two gears. It also benefited from hydraulic brakes and a good level of equipment all this for the princely sum of just £120 brand new. One of the great automotive success stories of the Thirties and one of the best-loved pre-war cars, it is no exaggeration that some say it was the Eight that saved Morris. Small and affordable but with room for all the family, it was far more suited to Britain's increasingly crowded roads than the larger models that had formerly underpinned the Morris range. So successful was it that within three years of its introduction in June 1935, over 116,000 had been sold by the time it was replaced by the Series II in 1937.
