MG MIDGET
Convertible 1500 Anniversary Edition (1980)
In stock here at RFH Classics we have this amazingly low mileage 1980 (V) MG Midget 1500 50th Anniversary Edition. The car is number 336 of the final 500 made and like all the others was manufactured with the Gloss Black exterior and Black Vinyl interior. Is this possibly one of the lowest mileage 50th Anniversary Edition cars available on the market today? This 43 year old car has an incredibly low mileage of just 10,800 miles from new and has spent most of its life in storage and owned by enthusiastic collectors with almost no use. It would appear that it was rust proofed from new by AA Protectol (with the original sticker still present in the windscreen) and it is in beautiful condition with little to no marks around the car.
The last owner purchased the car in 2020 from a well known MG Specialist with just 7,947 mile on the speedo and undertook a very light recommissioning of the car with new tyres (to replace the unworn, but out of date factory originals), a stainless steel-exhaust and all perishable brake components replaced. Unsurprisingly the rear brake shoes and drums are the factory originals and at the time these were confirmed by experts as in perfect working order. They used the car sparingly and when it was not being driven it was professionally stored and cared for during winter months.
The car has an interesting history and was previously owned and formed part of the TV presenter Richard Hammond’s personal collection during 2017/18. During his ownership it only did around 200 miles and he featured the car in a Drive Tribe film at that time. The car also caught the attention of Classic & Sports Car magazine and it was featured in a back-to-back test with a Triumph Spitfire in March 2021, a copy of which is in the history file.
The history identified for this little time warp car is as follows:
• The car was manufactured between the 12th / 13th November 1979 and subsequently shipped to the selling dealer, Henlys of Chester on the 23rd of November 1979.
• The first owner collected the car from Henlys of Chester on 1st March 1980 with just 8 delivery miles on the clock and owned it until 10th October 1984. Not a lot is known about the 1st owner but clearly the car had very little use.
• The second owner went on to purchase the car and it is understood to have formed part of a collection for the following 20 years until the 28th May 2004.
• The third owner had the car for just over 12 years. Records indicate them having an annual MOT and serviced at the same garage (Tuers Garage Halewood, Liverpool) until 2016. The cars mileage, from the earliest MOT records, appears to have gone from just 4,593 in June 2006 to 7,236 by May 2016.
• The fourth owner only had the car for just under a year and did around 400 miles between 2016/17 before selling it to Richard Hammond, the fifth owner on the 26th of June 2017. It appears that during his ownership the car had MOT tests done twice and with less than 200 miles undertaken before selling it to another collector with just 7,902 miles on the clock on 20th October 2018.
• The sixth owner stored the car and only recorded 45 miles between 20th October 2018 and 5th March 2020 when the last owner purchased the car from Beech Hill Garage, Reading with just 7,947 miles on the clock.
The car is correct to the spec it left the factory 43 years ago and has not been messed or played around with. The bodywork is rust free and sound and the hood, hood cover and tonneau cover are the original and perfect with the hood cover still wrapped in the original cloth bag supplied from new. In the boot the spare wheel, jack and tools have never been used and in their original bags although the tyre was also replaced on the spare when the others were done as it was out of date. The Black Vinyl interior is like a new car with a perfect dash and all elements are correct, present and in working order. The bumpers are like new and the car still retains its original raised letter period number plates.
This car has not been overly restored and is fantastic example of the genuine 50th Anniversary Edition car that for sure will go on to be cherished by the new owner as it has been by the previous. The history file for the car includes a Heritage Certificate confirming all matching numbers and its authenticity, owner’s manual, sales brochures, service and repair invoices as well as the C&SC magazine containing the road test. Although exempt from now needing an MOT the car has recently had a new one which is valid until Feb-24. Included within the screen price we supply the car with Service Inspection and 3 months warranty.
